Tips for Starting a Photography Collection

Anyone living in Westport CT knows that the plethora of artists and art galleries make starting an art collection particularly enticing. If you're not sure what to focus on collecting, photography might be the perfect medium. Here are some tips on how to create a meaningful photography collection.

Visit Museums and Galleries

Before you begin a collection, it is helpful to know what type of work appeals to you. Fortunately, you can find art Westport CT, at a large number of galleries and museums where you can study different styles. Think about what draws you to some photos more than others and see if you feel similarly about other works of the artists you like.

Choose Your Subject

The most substantial collections have a theme or focus around which each piece revolves. For example, you may find that you love portraits, or a particular artist's perspective draws you. When you find a common thread for photography that moves you, consider it a starting point to begin collecting.

Buy Within a Budget

Think of your photography collection as something that evolves and expands over your lifetime. When you start collecting, consider what you can realistically afford and buy the best piece you can find within your budget. Be wary of acquiring pieces that you don't love even if they are affordable.

Learn the History

There are several things to consider about an individual photograph before deciding how much it is worth. Factors that can affect a photo's value include placement within an edition, its creation from an original negative, its size and physical condition. As you gain experience, such attributes will become increasingly important when deciding what to include in your collection.

Collecting photography can be an exciting and fulfilling endeavor. By taking the time to familiarize yourself with different artistic styles and acquisition principles, you can take pride in a well-curated collection.

:Today's Flowers/Ruby Tuesday: Dahlia

Click the image to enlarge
My SIL is very fond of gardening and she has lots of flower plants in her garden in Trent. G.B.  I've seen how pretty her garden is and I told her that I would post in my blogs her collection.  She shared her precious pics to me and I'm sharing this lovely Red and White Dahlia.  Such a striking combination for a flower.  I just love the pattern of shades.

:Today's Flowers#104/Ruby Tuesday : Zinnia

Click the images to enlarge

This is one flower specie that I love to look at always because they stand at the crowd. Their vivid color and their petals are a sight to love. They're perfect for photo shoot also as they can be easily captured with one shot only unlike the pale colored flowers where you have to concentrate on the lights and angle to have a clear shot. These shots are all taken on one snap each only in the same village in Montalban where hubby's family lives. Very colorful and pretty don't you think?

Here's some info from Mr. Wikipedia:

Zinnia is a genus of 20 species of annual and perennial plants of family Asteraceae, originally from scrub and dry grassland in an area stretching from the American Southwest to South America, but primarily Mexico, and notable for their solitary long-stemmed flowers that come in a variety of bright colors.

Zinnia leaves are opposite and usually stalkless (sessile), with a shape ranging from linear to ovate, and pale to middle green in color. The flowers have a range of appearances, from a single row of petals, to a dome shape, with the colors white, chartreuse, yellow, orange, red, purple, and lilac.

Zinnias are popular garden flowers, usually grown from seed, and preferably in fertile, humus-rich, and well-drained soil, in an area with full sun. They will reseed themselves each year. Over 100 cultivars have been produced since selective breeding started in the 19th century.

:Today's Flowers#101/Ruby Tuesday - Rooster Cockscombs

Click the images to enlarge

I'm still asking the name of this flower because my Mom calls it 'Palong Manok' because it resembles the Rooster cockscombs, all I know of this one is they're blooming so beautifully in our hometown in Laguna. Though, this one is not from Laguna. I got this shot from my Mom-in-law's garden in Montalban. I noticed that they grow in clusters!

:Today's Flowers/Ruby Tuesday : Red Santan

Click the images to enlarge

I'm happy that I'm back here in my favorite and one of the first meme I joined when I was in my first year of blogging. I love flowers and every where I go no flower escapes my lens lol! My eye always hunts their beauty no matter how simple and small they are like this red santan blooms which looks like pink in macro shots maybe due to sunshine. Santan (Ixora Coccinea) is an all season flower here in our country.

Studies revealed many healing properties of this flower like: wound healing, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antitumor, anti-inflammatory,anti-ulcer, protection against electroconvulsions and many other uses.

:Today's Flowers#90-White Flower Tree

Click the images to enlarge

Wow it's been two months now since my last entry for Today's Flowers because I've been too busy to stroll outside and take beautiful shots of flowers. I miss the group and the meme so I'm posting here my stock photo last December of a white-flower tree that's been used also as a christmas tree by the owner of the villa we're renting. Here I've posted a more closer look at the first photo and the whole tree at the second shot where you'll see some red and yellow balls hanging on the tree! Such lovely tree and flowers!

:TC - Small Animals - Birds

for fun and learning

"SMALL ANIMALS" (Pets, Insects, Birds,...)

I took the shot of these small birds at my son's school while waiting for him to finish his special examinations. He had been sick for three days in time for their periodical exams so I was given a schedule for him to take the special exams. I brought my digicam to spend my waiting hours outside the room and got interested in the birds flying in and out the schooll's perimeter. I took the first shot near the bench I'm sitting on. Cute little birds and we call it 'Maya'. We also have plenty of them here in our backyard because we have many fruit trees here. View my other entry here!

:Ruby Tuesday - Arcade Car

This is one of the cars in Quantum Arcade in SM North Edsa where Josh and my girls had fun when we played there while waiting for their Dad. Forgive the slightly dark shot of his face here as the light is dark on his position. Just thought that the car is so cute just like Mr. Bean's car but different in color.

:TC - High or Low - Ferris Wheel from Below

for fun and learningHigh
Low
Got a pretty shot here from below where Josh and I were both staring at the towering ferris wheel in enchanted kingdom, one of the best amusement parks in our place. We didn't ride in one of those stomach fluttering seats, we're contented enough to watch from where we stand. I'm afraid of heights and I wouldn't trust myself with my lil boy with me lol!

The second one is a shot from the top of the five-storey building (I was in the fourth floor inside or rented room for the church). It's actually my first time there last year and I just wanted a scene from top to show it to my other church mates who were not there with us when we visited it first. It's between 8-9pm then last August 2009. The weather is humid and after the shot it rained a bit.

:Today's Flowers #81 and MYM#2

Click the images to enlarge

These two shots were taken on the garden beside my former office in Libis where the owner lend the place to a family and they built a wonderful garden of vegetable and flower plants. I even bought some plants for my Mom. I missed the place because it's the first thing that I get to see before reaching our building and these beautiful Española flowers (am I right?) were the ones near the road. I have to brave myself before the family's watchdog before I had these shots! Anyway they held the dogs while I take the shots but I'm really not comfortable if they're not tied lol!

It's my granny's favorite flowers and we used to put some of these kinds in her grave when I was young.

Happy Monday!

:PH#197 : Balanced with Seesaw

Click images for a larger view

Josh is trying to balance with his sister Gen in this SEESAW (also known as a teeter-totter or teeter board) but because they're not the same weight Josh was suspended on top most of the times. Gen just can't hold her laughs on this as she almost slumps when Josh is on the top. This seesaw is a complete fun ride for my siblings during our lunch break from fellowship on the villa.

Got another entry here.

:Today's Flowers #75 and MYM#1

Click the images to enlarge

These two shots were taken on different places and with different digicams but I find them both beautiful. The first one with only a single yellow bloom was taken in Villa Dominga Forest Resort in Cavite and the next picture of clusters of the same yellow bloom was just taken near our house on one of our neighbor's small garden. I was just passing by when I noticed the flowers and because I had my cam with me then I had some good pretty shots!
