Five of the Best Roads for Cycling in Australia

When it comes to scenery, Australia is truly unique. The desert and the bush in the outback look almost alien to the eye because of its one of a kind rock formation. Many cyclists enjoy these views while they trek across state lines and some of these rough terrains prepare them for tough races.

But cyclists are not limited to the outback; there are rainforests, endless beaches and pristine city streets. However, some trails need a reasonable level of fitness and require experience in bike touring. Self-sufficiently is the key if you want to disappear on a bike ride for two weeks. Just be sure that you have the right equipment. Check out http://www.merida.com.au/ for ideas on what you need. Here is a list of five of the best trails you can ride along.

1. The South Coast of Western Australia

Not much traffic along this road which is good because there is plenty to see when it comes to beaches and nature. Sightseeing highlights include; wineries, Margaret River, Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, rail trails, Greens Pool and national parks. With plenty of hills to climb up, the South Coast is an interesting rollercoaster ride on two wheels.

2. Great Ocean Road One of the best bike riding trails in Australia; many cyclists venture here to sample the area's diverse hinterland. Whether it is mountain biking or cycling along the stretchy road, you can see a lot. There is the Twelve Apostles, Bells Beach, Port Fairy, rainforests and numerous waterfalls. Animals unique to Australia's wildlife also make an appearance.

3. Melbourne's Bay-in-a-day trek This trail takes you around the famous city and is 200km long. Cyclists are able to stretch out this trek over as many days as you like because there is a lot to see at Queenscliff and Geelong. Museums, Indigenous art and culture, old architecture and train trails. As for the city of Melbourne, it is the shopping destination of Australia. Bourke St Mall and Swanston St is the place to go. The cuisine is very multicultural and hotels are a plenty. Crown casino is there and also a large aquarium. Luna Park also calls Melbourne home.

4. Sydney Harbour Bridge Known as the most recognisable landmark in Australia, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a great way to see the harbour. Over 1600 commuters use this bridge weekly and that includes cyclists. This bridge is the busiest link in the Metro Sydney Bike Network. Besides the harbour, cyclists can see the famous Sydney Opera House and sample many of its restaurants. There are also many great parks to relax in for a picnic.

5. Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge The largest and most popular race in Queensland, this is a road challenge, many cyclists wait every year for because they can raise money for charity. 100km long, riders leave from Brisbane’s South Bank and travel along the Pacific Motorway to Broadwater Parklands in Southport. But riders can choose to complete the 60km long trek or finish at intervals. To help keep this event fun, the organizers get live entertainment and setup plenty of food stalls.

Rehabilitation of Manila-East Road

Have attended the meeting called by our town’s mayor Mon Ilagan and DPWH Edgardo Peralta regarding the Rehabilitation of Manila-East Road. Our one-lane road would be widened to 15 km. to add another lane, new drainage and sidewalk. DPWH officials think that it will solve the drainage and traffic problem of the town which I agree but a lot sacrifice for the residents who live along A Bonifacio Ave. The people who live along A. Bonifacio are the original clans and families of Cainta. I was relieved that they didn’t pursue with the original plan of 20 kms because that would be getting much of our lands. I noticed that all families attended and everybody want to express their view on this impending widening on our community.

Crossing Dangerous Roads

It's Wednesday again and as I'm going to attend my bible study I will be crossing the street again at night, the very dangerous road in front of our office. I used to wait for other employees for us to cross the road in group but since it's past the hour of the usual time out I found myself alone in that road again. I'm an expert in crossing roads in the past having our own home near the national road but I became very careful since the Libis road accident. Who wouldn’t be careful and cautious if you’ve actually witnessed group of people being hit by cars which were run over a big truck which has lost its brake. Ten employees of a known company of stylish shirt and one guard who was managing the traffic were hit and immediately rushed to hospital. Thanks God none of them died in that accident.

I faced my fears and crossed the street bravely now with the thought that even if I have no companion in crossing the street I know God is with me and I shall never fear anything when I’m with Him.

Dangerous Libis Roads

Our office is situated across Mercury Avenue in Libis, it was a quiet road and free from bad elements most of the time. During lunch break we spent our few minutes in conference room where we can see all the cars passing through the roads, it was a welcome sight as it relieves pressure of work. The view is also beautiful at night where you can see from afar the hills of Antipolo with shimmering lights of houses and restaurants. It felt good looking at the sight adding up the beautiful lights of the high-rise buildings in Eastwood.

We are located 3-4 blocks from the flyover and because of this the cars coming from it sped up fast and most of the time can’t control their speed even when passing a pedestrian lane. This beautiful place became a nightmare when one early evening around 5-6pm a mercury drug corporation security guard together with 10 employees from a clothes company was hit by a car. We were in the office and half of us have seen through glass windows what happened to the victims.

The guard was signaling the car to stop to let pedestrians cross the street. The two cars stopped but the big truck behind them didn’t and that caused the accident. The guard was badly hit while the others were partially hurt, luckily no casualty but all of them were immediately sent to medical city. We were shocked and later can’t find the courage to cross the street as we’ve seen the vehicles involved. The car’s windows were broken as one body hit the windshield, the truck were investigated and found a faulty brake, and the other car was crushed.

After this accident no security guard was seen in that pedestrian again, maybe they can’t control their fear over the accident and would like to rest for awhile. Luckily all victims recovered fast and someone from our office requested Citizen’s Patrol to cover in their show the need for a footbridge. The interview was shown on TV and we’re hoping that the officials in charge will approve the request as soon as possible.
